What is an IDC?

The Instructor Development Course (IDC) consists of two parts:

  • the Assistant Instructor (AI) course

Y

  • the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program. Most dive professionals complete the entire IDC and then attend an Instructor Examination (IE), which is the final step in earning PADI Instructor certification.

Successful completion of just one AI course earns you a PADI Assistant Instructor qualification.

When an AI is ready to progress, attending an OWSI program allows you to participate in an IE toward full PADI Instructor status.

Dive professionals who hold an instructor level from another dive training organization may be eligible to enroll directly in the OWSI program. This recognizes prior instructor training and sets you on the path to becoming a PADI Instructor.
